Here it is after 6 long months of incubation…
The very first resource from the ‘Over 45s Job Readiness Tool Kit’, provided by the new Community, Stable and Wise.
The Community where your maturity, skills and experience are valued – delivering the job you deserve; the right job. Together we’ll solve the rampant age discrimination against mature age Australians.
The Kit provides training programs, expert career guidance, and local area buddy groups, and we’ll be publishing a new resource every day for the next 3 months. To access them all, become a Foundation Member, just go to – https://www.stableandwise.com/
The first resource is the Roadmap. Then…
Resource 2: The 10 Golden Resume Rules | Resource 3: Bullet Proof Your Resume
Resource 4: Resume Tips you Can’t Ignore | Resource 5: The Power of Referees
Resource 6: The Ultimate Rules for Getting your Resume Read (including The Really Cool Email Secret you need to steal).
So, here’s the Roadmap…
Your resume is your sales ‘brochure’. It must sell you – it’s purpose is just to get you the interview!
Like all brochures, KEEP IT SHORT. Two pages are enough – no one reads more, and if they do they’ll probably miss the important bits.
Make it look good. There is no one correct format or layout, but your resume must be easy to read and look professional.
Check spelling and grammar (use Grammarly – it’s free). Then get at least two friends/colleagues/buddies to read and discover what you’ve missed.
Use bullet points– otherwise, your key selling points get lost.
Use strong action words: ‘completed’, ‘managed’, ‘changed’, ‘implemented’, ‘led’.
Reverse chronological order – most recent job first. The first thing they read is what they’ll remember (and the current or most recent job is the most important).
For each job, list your responsibilities and your achievements. This is essential to show why you’re right for this job.
Do NOT put the referee names in. Just say “will be provided later”.
Work hard on your covering email. Tailor it for the job,- only 3 short bullet points.
Always follow up by phone. You’ve gone to all this trouble, why wouldn’t you?!
