Your Interview Guide: The Roadmap

Your Interview Guide: The Roadmap

This is the interview preparation guide where you can build your interview skills. It’s for all ages,  but is most urgently needed by the over 45s…

  1. The No. 1 interview goal: Securing a job offer.
Age discrimination in the workplace: mature age worker meeting the interviewer
  2. Present the best impression of yourself and gain more knowledge about the job and employer.
  3. Meeting with an employer is a two-way street – treat the meeting as a great way to learn more about each other.
  4. Nervous about the interview? We all are, but practice and preparation minimises it.
  5. Interviewers are nervous too. They also have pressures and fears – knowing this is great for getting rid of nerves.
  6. Preparation is everything; don’t attend until you’ve researched the company and the job so you know it’s potentially right for you.
  7. Preparation impresses the employer – it tells them that you’re proactive, knowledgeable and interested in them and the company.
  8. Consider what type of question you will be asked – remember there are always unspoken ones.
  9. Consider the questions YOU’LL ask – see our lists in future Articles.
  10. Go over the Interview Checklist before every interview.
  11. Go over the Checklist of Things to Avoid in interviews.

Your main goal is simple – securing a job offer. With an offer, you now ‘own an option’ – to accept, decline or raise the offer.

Your other valuable Goals?

  • Presenting the best YOU
  • Learning all you can about the Job and your potential new boss
  • Learning more about the organisation

Your interim goal? To move one or two steps forward in your job search.

One vital next step? To decide by the end of the interview if this job or organisation is not for you. Not after everyone’s wasted time on three interviews and reference checking. Openly sharing information helps you decide early.

But, don’t decide until the next day – keep your options open!
